January 2018 • Arlington, TX

What I liked

Friendly staff, lots of Friendly customers as well. I felt like I was truly making a difference in the lives of the people that came through the doors of the missionary.

What I wish was different

I wish I didn't get moved from station to station, but I'm also glad I did, because it gave me an opportunity to grow with the other employees there.

Advice

Volunteer work at Mission Arlington can be rewarding, but there are lots of Christians, so if you are picky on your religious friends, please don't try to volunteer there and mess up their kind-hearted vibes.

Employee at Camp Oakhurst

May - August 2019 • Coarsegold, CA

What I liked

I went there as an internship (not getting paid) to an employee (who was paid. I Wasn’t the one to bring up working as an employee to the executive director, his wife brought it up to me because saw said, “your such a hard worker, you should get paid” Also the jobs they gave more were very different. Some were outdoors with activities and others were indoors, like kitchen and office. What I liked most was Lifeguarding and High ropes.

What I wish was different

When there was division between employees that I wanted to hang out with. This was not the camps fault it was just certain employees didn’t like others. Other than that I really liked this experience a lot!

Advice

Go into this job willing to work whatever is given. Try to see positive about most things because then you are more excited to work rather than being disappointed. The executive director tries to accommodate for your needs with days off and if you end up getting sick.

Volunteer Narcotics Anonymous Newark NJ.

November 2019 • Newark, NJ

What I liked

This was an ideal opportunity for me to experience what it entails to attend addiction recovery meetings and perhaps borrow ideas that I could apply in my encounter with addicts and homeless people in New Jersey.

What I wish was different

Sad eyes

Advice

The 12-step meeting I attended in Newark, New Jersey, taught me the importance of social and moral support in the recovery process. Belonging to and attending such informal groups and meetings can, therefore, have a profound impact on substance recovery.

Mentoring Individuals in Science from Underrepresented Communities on Campus

June - September 2019 • Davis, CA

What I liked

Getting to speak to students who are new to UC Davis one on one, whom were just as confused as I was about the big campus, and help guide them to wonderful resources and connections on campus that can help them excel in school.

What I wish was different

None! I took this on as a volunteer with no expectations except to better someone's college experience.

Advice

Be proactive with offering assistance!! When you have something to offer, time, knowledge of resources, offer to read through application essays, even just an ear to listen, it can potentially make a big difference for someone who isn't as familiar to the campus. Who knows, you might make new friends, or hear about cool opportunities you can also benefit from!
