I liked the environment which included the staff, who were very supportive and helpful in welcoming volunteers who are interested in helping their community. I enjoyed the aspect of empathizing with callers and referring them to resources that could help further their journeys to a healthier way of mental living.
What I wish was different
Despite training, I wish I had become more prepared to respond to unexpected questions or situations in order to better grasp the position.
Advice
I would advise potential volunteers who are interested in Helpline volunteering to learn more about the resources that their local community provides regarding helping people who are sufferers themselves or know others who are seeking mental health resources to improve their lives.
