I was able to sit in on a grant panel and observe the grant process first hand. This was helpful for future insight on what grant panels look at and how they decide what to fund or not. DC is a great place to live and for someone interested in museums or the arts it was a great place be immersed in that scene.
What I wish was different
It was unpaid which was not ideal, and being at such a large institution interns don't always have very exciting jobs.
Advice
Be particular about what department you apply to. The library fit the skills I already had but I could have been challenged and probably learned more in another department.

What I liked
We had the opportunity to work on important and interesting projects that felt like you were actually making a difference. The people I worked with were amazing, and the internship program allowed for many "field trips" to learn more about D.C. and the NEH.
What I wish was different
Some projects were tedious or not related to Congress specifically.
Advice
Meet and talk to different people in the agency. Everyone comes from a different background, and they all have something interesting to teach you.

What I liked
I really enjoyed the opportunity that this internship gave me to be immersed in the atmosphere of Capitol Hill, however in a purposeful and impact-oriented position. We worked on actual briefs and memos, corresponded with congressional offices and independently planned events and opportunities for constituents who have been awarded NEH grants. Additionally, I had a really great intern cohort and we had the opportunity to organize trips around DC as a group throughout our time over the summer.
