The actuarial team is very young and extremely fun at National General. I was able to go out with my coworkers on several occasions, such as the company golf outing which fell on my 21st birthday! I work on the brand new pricing model for our self-funded health team and directly contribute to our multi-million dollar product with my own variables and analysis. The office is so close to campus that I can walk to work in under 10 minutes during the school year, which has made for an easy part-time transition.
What I wish was different
The company is rapidly expanding, so there is a lot of shuffling around of employees in the office as less and less space is available. While the company is in the process of acquiring a second office-space, this did cause some headache since I am currently in the middle of IT instead of the Actuarial department.
Advice
I would say don't be scared to come at big projects in a completely different way than normal. My manager and other teammates looked to me constantly for a fresh take on rating variables, and we have even researched things which I suggested adding to the pricing model. There's the classic stereotype that interns are just the support team for actual employees, but here your contributions are directly impacting the company at the highest level.
