Digital Marketing Intern

June - August 2017 • Syracuse, NY

What I liked

I liked that I was able to learn more about how to post on social media from a business perspective. I got to learn how to use the platform Sprinklr, which I think will be really helpful. Also I was treated like an adult instead of just an intern. They really valued my opinions and trusted me with a lot.

What I wish was different

I wish that my start date was earlier. There were issues with onboarding dates, and they started most interns way later than normal.

Advice

If you want to learn something specific, just ask. It'll show a lot to your boss and colleagues that you're interested in the work, and honestly they won't know what you really want to learn unless you ask.

Business Development Intern

May - August 2017 • Waltham, MA

What I liked

I really enjoyed the environment, the people I worked with, and just the emphasis on the development of skills that I could use during my time there and future internships/jobs I pursue. They were very inviting, and ensured that the time I spent there was about how I could professionally develop, and less about what work they could make me do.

What I wish was different

I wished I could have gained more industry-specific skills, such as computer software, etc.

Advice

Be willing to be a self-starter. What made this summer for me was that I was always on the hunt for new tasks, and it lead to me being able to work on a project with the National Grid US CEO/President. Be willing to extend extra effort and work, because it can definitely pay huge dividends in the end.

Operations and Controls Manager's Intern

May - August 2018 • Island Park, NY

What I liked

Gave me real life job experience. I got comfortable working with people older than I am and there were many opportunities to network.

What I wish was different

Advice

Proves that time and experience goes a long way so never get discouraged. When I first started at the power plant I knew nothing about power generation. It was very intimidating walking around the power plant and not knowing how any of the systems/machines worked or what their purpose was. However, by the end of the summer I was giving tours to visitors at the plant and was able to almost any question they asked me.

Plant Optimization and NERC CIP Compliance Intern

May - August 2018 • Hicksville, NY

What I liked

What I wish was different

Advice

Don't be afraid to speak up. When I first started I was placed in a Power Plant and there was a mistake in HR that led the plant to think I was a mechanical engineering student. At the beginning of my internship, they did not have any work for me as a Computer Science student. I spoke with my supervisor and explained that I was interested in finding a part of the company that would better suit my interests. My supervisor transferred me into the Plant Optimization and NERC CIP Compliance department which was really interesting and I had a much better experience from that point on.

Overall, I valued the intern Lunch and Learn sessions, specifically the one focused on resume review. In my specific department, I enjoyed working with a team that had a start-up like culture. This department is new and overflowing with projects so I could tell that my efforts had impact.

Chemical Engineering Intern

May - August 2018 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I loved the small plant atmosphere. I was able to develop great relationships with everyone in the plant, as well as all of the visitors. I also was given large responsibilities due to the fact that everyone there was aware of my capabilities.

What I wish was different

I wish my commute was a little shorter. NY traffic is not light and so a 2 hour drive home everyday is not ideal.

Advice

If you have the opportunity to work for this company, do it! They have a wonderful workplace environment. The employees push you to be your best self. Take advantage of every moment because you get what you put into it.

IT change delivery intern

July 2020 • Waltham, MA

What I liked

I love how willing people are to help within the company with whatever questions you might have or with the projects that you are working on. They are very accommodating and my current boss is very constructive with the comments about how I can improve myself for my future careers.

What I wish was different

I wish it wasn't a virtual internship due to the COVID.

Advice

I would share that it is a great place to work with many wonderful opportunities to grow and develop as a future employee. I would say if you are thinking about making a bold move within the company, do it! You may not like it at first, but it will be great experience regardless.
