I worked very closely with a computer science professor as a mentor in a team of 5-8 for three summers. I really enjoyed working on the team and the other interns were all very friendly and fun to work with. While the mentor did provide us some technical support, we got a lot of time to ourselves to collaborate and work on our project.
What I wish was different
Since we were helping our mentor create something he had never created before, he did not always have domain-expertise, and we, the interns, had to do quite a bit of research and learning ourselves. Though I enjoyed the learning process and being able to explore different software and their alternatives, it's not everyone's cup of tea.
Advice
Stay communicative with your mentor and fellow interns, not only so you know you're on track to complete your objectives, but also so if you ever run into issues, you don't have to struggle alone, and your mentor might even change your task objective accordingly.
