I had a lot of fun working on boats. Instrumentation and data analysis matched my studies pretty well.
What I wish was different
I was with a lot of mechanical engineers. I would have liked to be with some more software folks. You apply to a lab, not a job position, and they pair you with a team.
Advice
Take on as much work as they are willing to give. I was part of 5 different projects, and I got many unique experiences from each one.

What I liked
The different types of jobs I was doing while working there was my favorite part. I wasn’t stuck doing only one thing all day, but i was doing a few things consistently each week with additional, one-time jobs on top of my weekly projects.
What I wish was different
Since the job is with the government, many of the processes are slow going and take more time than you might expect. Sometimes I wished that projects would speed up, but they had to be approved by many people before they could be completed.
Advice
Learning all of the abbreviations for departments and divisions can be difficult, but it will all start to make sense when you spend more time on the job.
