Graphic Design Intern

June - August 2019 • Woonsocket, RI

What I liked

I was the sole designer for the Levitt AMP Summer Concert series, which included designing numerous posters, signs and ads to promote. As well, I was able to meet with a different department of the company each week to develop a new marketing plan with my fellow communications interns. There, I did the design work while another created the schedule of releases, and another did the journalism side of the plan. The atmosphere of the company was very laid back and friendly. I couldn't have asked for a better group to introduce me to the real world of graphic design. My supervisor was able to provide guidance while also giving me the chance to express my individualism and leave me to make creative decisions. This is the type of atmosphere I would like to work in when I leave school.

What I wish was different

Although this was an amazing experience, I wish it had been a paid internship. I had to juggle 3 differentiation jobs this summer in order to have spending money for the entire summer. If it was paid, I would have only had the internship as a job, and I would have taken on more hours there. I would love to work with the company though.

Advice

Step out of your comfort zone when entering a field. You want employers to see you are willing to take on challenges rather than playing it safe. You will make mistakes, but it's more impressive to an employer that you're willing to take on something new, no matter your previous experience. In the end, it will be a learning experience, and that's the sole purpose of an internship.
