Nevada Small Business Development Center

Marketing & Communications Intern

August 2022 • Reno, NV

What I liked

I loved the other interns I worked with; we got so close. The advisors that work here are amazing people as well and were always there to support me when I needed help on a project. They are understanding and thoughtful when it comes to your workload, and have taught me so much about how to be professional in the workplace.

What I wish was different

I honestly do not wish anything had been different. I have worked here for over a year and want to continue working here until I graduate.

Advice

An amazing internship that taught me so much about marketing and strategic communications in the real world. I got to work hands-on with experienced advisors with their clients to help them start their small businesses or grow their already existing small businesses. For anyone interested in applying - know you will learn so much more than you expect. You will work on so many projects including business plans, marketing strategies, website/social media audits, industry research, legal research, brainstorming, event planning, geographic research, financial planning, and more!

Marketing and Communications Intern

April - October 2019 • Reno, NV

What I liked

The SBDC has a small staff, about 10 permanent employees, which makes it a tight-knit work environment. You get very close with the other interns, who all work in the same room as you. Everyone is very funny and loves to have a good time, but also work very hard!

What I wish was different

I wish there had been better communication between me and the supervisor, because I didn’t get to meet with him as often as other interns. Also, I wish there had been more leeway for learning opportunities, because they do expect you to have almost full knowledge of business terms when entering the internship.

Advice

Be savvy with your field, and know how to work autonomously, because that’s how most work gets done! Having a social personality also helps you create bonds with the professional staff, who are very helpful with assignments and clients when needed.
