I valued the opportunity to gain real-world experience within the Criminal Justice system that I intend to pursue as a career. I enjoyed advocating for at-risk individuals and collaboratively seeking improvement for their reduced circumstances by networking, communication, and needs assessment. I like that I learned how to better speak with a diverse population and take on added responsibilities.
What I wish was different
I wish that I had networked even more with representatives at the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office to increase my professional network. I used business cards and 'thank you' cards to leave lasting impressions and build connections; however, I would like to have enhanced my experience with solid contacts.
Advice
Working within the detention center adds to your expertise, but investing in the community through Sheriff's Office outreach programs and county Local Rentry Councils builds your sense of fulfillment to service and engages the community.
