New Mexico Tech

Undergraduate Researcher for Materials Engineering Department

May 2019 • Socorro, NM

What I liked

I really enjoyed getting hands-on experience with equipment such as 3D printers, mechanical tester, lathe, etc. I also was fond of learning to conduct and alter experimental tests in regard to my own ongoing research project.

What I wish was different

As a materials undergraduate research group, it would be nice to get more training on machining equipment instead of relying on mechanical engineering groups to perform projects/jobs for us.

Advice

I would advise students to engage in research team discussions as much as possible. Do not hold back any input you may have. You are there to find solutions and help further the research with your team!

Undergraduate Research Assistant

May - August 2019 • Socorro, NM

What I liked

I liked the independence of choosing my own research projects and methods.

What I wish was different

I wish I worked full-time as a researcher instead of only part-time, but funding was only available for a part-time position.

Advice

Talk to your professors and ask them about the research that they do. Many professors at NMT are willing to give undergraduates research experience and take them on as summer or continual research assistants.

IT Support Specialist

June 2019 • Socorro, NM

What I liked

I enjoyed that I could work up to full time hours but less if I wanted.

What I wish was different

There were a lot of postings around campus for positions that were no longer available, so it would be nice if those were taken down after the position was filled.

Advice

Make sure you follow up with prospective employers. Don't be afraid to send an email to check in with the hiring process.

Undergraduate Research Assistant

What I liked

Flexibility to work on my free time around school and vacation.

What I wish was different

nothing

Advice

Work hard. If you are looking for a job to just submit hours, do not go into research. I easily worked 80 hours per week, but I loved it. Research takes dedication, and this is not a job for the typical student that wants spending money.

Research Assistant

May 2019 • Socorro, NM

What I liked

I was able to talk with many professors that were available on campus over the summer to further my research. New Mexico Tech also provided me with fantastic facility resources so that I could properly run my project. My research professor was also extremely helpful, and I learned skills that are highly sought after for jobs in my field.

What I wish was different

I was very excited to work, and would have loved if I was allowed to work more hours.

Advice

Undergraduate research is one of the best opportunities to gain experience in your field early on. These opportunities also allow you to get in touch with professionals in your field that you may then network with a later date. I wish all students could share in this experience, in my opinion doing undergraduate research is fully utilizing the opportunities available at New Mexico Tech.

Undergraduate Researcher

January 2018 • Socorro, NM

What I liked

Research is a great experience. My current work and advisor are wonderful to work with, and I've learned a ton. It's introduced me to entirely new fields, and helped me decide on what I want to do post graduation.

What I wish was different

I do wish the school would allow a full 40 hour work week if the student finds it possible. I spend much more than 20 hours a week doing research because I enjoy it and because I have to if I really want to accomplish anything.

Advice

If you're interested in research at all, start talking to Professors. They love to talk about their work, and one might just offer you a job.
