What I liked

I loved working with infants and toddlers. It made me consider a career path in which I work with kids.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more hands-on training! In some ways, having to take the initiative to figure things out helped me to develop my confidence and strength as a leader. However, I believe that the lack of training was due to there not being enough time for those in higher positions to do so, and not because this was an intentional part of the learning process.

Advice

I would always be open to trying new things. I was previously aiming to get into a research program for the summer but by keeping an open mind to being willing to experience something different, I actually learned a great deal from working at an early learning center. By trying new paths, you open yourself up to experiences that you previously otherwise would have not even considered. Do not block opportunities that could benefit your long-term goals, even if you are unsure about it at first. Use discernment and understand that cookie-cutter paths may not benefit you in particular since everyone's path is meant to be unique.
