The New York City Department of Health & Mental Hygiene (DOHMH)'s internship program is an amazing experience for Public Health students. DOHMH is the one of the largest and oldest health agencies in the United States. There are many positions available in different bureaus within DOHMH, and each intern is placed based on their interests and experience. My supervisor was a great mentor. She taught me invaluable skills and gave me a meaningful project that I was able to take the lead on.
What I wish was different
The hiring status took a few months and it was difficult to plan ahead because there were no updates until I received my start date.
Advice
Make the most of the educational and networking opportunities that are offered to the intern cohort.

Communications Intern
June - August 2018 • New York City, NY
What I liked
A lot of resources within the DOHMH, including people who are willing to speak with you about the type of work they do. It was a great way to learn more about the many sides of public health.
What I wish was different
A lot of bureaucracy made it hard to get things done in a timely manner. It made it difficult to accomplish much in terms of deliverables during a 3 month internship.
Advice
Reach out to people if you have questions or want to learn more about something they are involved in. Go to events, presentations, training sessions. This will help you get the most out of your time there.
