What I liked
I loved the fast-paced work environment on my team at NYCEDC. My supervisors entrusted me with real responsibilities on interesting tasks, and I was invited to share my thoughts on important decisions on a regular basis. The breadth of projects underway at the organization gave me a chance to interact with people working across fields and learn more about the cutting-edge work they're doing.
What I wish was different
Advice
An internship at the NYCEDC is extremely rewarding, depending on the project you're on. I had a wonderful experience, but I would recommend learning a lot about the project you'll be working on--they're not all created equal--and trying to negotiate something that fits your interests. If you do accept an internship, take advantage of being surrounded by so many exciting and diverse projects. Get coffee with co-workers, go to intern networking and training events, and learn as much as you can about the prior careers of those around you.

What I liked
I was treated not like an intern but like a full member of the Partnerships team - NYCEDC is a hugely important and innovative organization and you can exposed to a lot of industries and kinds of work there. I was well supported, gained a lot of good contacts, and got to experience living in New York City and working downtown.
What I wish was different
There seemed to be some reluctance to discuss issues of equity or controversial topics like gentrification. I wouldn't have minded more opportunities to connect with members of the communities we worked with.
Advice
Come with a solid foundation on or at least a strong curiosity about how government interacts with the private sector.
