New York Life - Eastern Washington General Office

Paraplanner

June - August 2018 • Waltham, MA

What I liked

I liked that I worked directly for a top executive of the d=company doing data analytics and I also completed reviews for clients.

What I wish was different

I would've liked to have longer hours as I was only a part-time student

Financial Advisor Intern

June 2018 • Grand Rapids, MI

What I liked

I liked being able to see what financial advisors got to do on a daily basis. I also got to learn a lot of the rules and regulations and how advisors at this firm talked to their clients in such a way as to not be pushy, but also to create a little urgency.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have done some sort of project, but that is not the way this internship is set up. It is more of a job shadowing, which was still very beneficial to me.

Advice

Don't be afraid to negotiate schedules if you want this internship. There was a required minimum amount of time each week, but they were extremely flexible, and I was able to have another job in addition to doing this internship.

Agent

June - September 2018 • Grand Rapids, MI

What I liked

The experience overall was amazing. This internship turned into a full-time job where I now help people with their financial futures and goals.

What I wish was different

You are paid based on commission which is definitely difficult when you’re used to a steady paycheck, so I wish I would have been more prepared for that major change.

Advice

If you are interested in New York Life, don’t give up once you start. This career path isn’t for everyone because you own your own financial services practice, and with owning your own business you need to have strong self-discipline and people skills. Many people fail because they don’t try hard enough and they let the down sides get to them. You have to keep pushing and eventually it gets easier and easier until clients are coming to you.

Financial Planning Intern

July - August 2018 • Melville, NY

What I liked

I had the opportunity to shadow an extremely experienced agent in action. On these meetings we delved into many different aspects related to the role. This opportunity really opened my eyes to many different financial tools used to prolong ones wealth and the work it takes to produce.

What I wish was different

I wish I had some more hands on experience as I had to deal with a lot of office work.

Advice

If your going to do it, go full throttle. On the job there is so much opportunity to learn and grown, make sure to put yourself out there and take advantage!
