New York Presbyterian

Hospital Health Aide

July - August 2018 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I was here as part of SYEP. I liked the staff over at the EEG Lab as well as the staff in the Pediatrics Unit. They were extremely friendly and welcoming.

What I wish was different

I wish two volunteers would not be scheduled during the same shift because it often left me with nothing to do. It might be a 1 hour that I walk around looking for something to do. But I guess having more help than less help is better.

Advice

Make the most out of your time here. Ask questions about procedures, ask the staff if they need assistance with anything so you can keep busy.

Clinical Research Internship

June - August 2018 • New York City, NY

What I liked

My mentors were very kind and gave a lot of their time to help us gain the most from our time at the hospital. I was also exposed to various kinds of clinical research projects that were going on at the hospital, and attending the trial presentations gave me a glimpse into other possible roles that physicians could take on.

What I wish was different

I wish there had been better resources for finding housing and subsidies since it was an unpaid volunteer research position in a very expensive city.

Advice

I would encourage you to always reach out and socialize with the staff and faculty of the hospital. They know so much and can help you navigate your work and time in NYC. It's also important to keep in mind that certain staff/ faculty members will not appear to be very nice, as they are very busy and sometimes do not prioritize their interactions with lowly interns (such as myself) highly. Then, it was valuable to learn to navigate awkward encounters and interactions in which you don't feel very welcome. Overall, it was a great learning experience.

Occupational Therapist Volunteer

July - August 2018 • New York City, NY

What I liked

To learn about my field of interest by watching professionals help others.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have done more, but I understand that I was only a student volunteer who could not give treatment to patients.

Advice

If someone was looking to volunteer at a hospital, I would highly recommend it. I felt that I learned so much by watching and doing rather than just reading or being lectured. Also, make sure you ask a ton of questions while you are there and don't be afraid to make connections with doctors or therapists, they could help you get into schools or jobs in the future.

Volunteer

June - August 2018 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I liked the environment and how friendly the staff was. It made this experience worthwhile. I had a lot of meaningful patient interactions which was extremely rewarding.

What I wish was different

I regret not being able to shadow a physician during my time here. It would have given me more insight on the field. However, I know this is a possibility if I do return as a volunteer.

Advice

I would build strong connections with the staff, whether that be the nurses, nurse aids or doctors. Making these networks not only provides you with more insight on the field but can also allow for more opportunities/ experiences.

What I liked

How helpful my co workers were with my training. They wanted me to pass my probation period so they trained me to the best of their ability.

Advice

Acknowledge that everyone has a preference on what they think works best and everyone learns differently. Absorb all methods you’re taught on the job. Try everything out first to see what works best for you.
