Newhouse saves lives. Every nine seconds in the U.S. someone is assaulted or beaten. Newhouse is on the front lines, located in the urban core of Kansas City. We provide comprehensive services 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Here is a look at what we do every day:
Newhouse provides a safe refuge. After a violent incident, survivors and their children come to Newhouse – often with no possessions other than the clothes they are wearing. The first weeks in shelter are a time of respite and recovery from trauma.
We are breaking the cycle of violence. Children’s trauma is met with specialized therapists and advocates, childcare, a secure playground and an onsite public school. Adults overcome the devastating effects of violence, supported by our compassionate and understanding staff. Adults find success with case management and goal setting, group and individual therapy sessions, job readiness training, assistance in court and in securing community resources, classes in personal finance, nutrition, exercise, parenting and more.
Transitional housing and outreach services. As families continue to progress toward permanent housing and employment, they can access services offered at the shelter, with a long-term plan for safety and success. Outreach services allow families to stay connected to the Newhouse network of support.
Families leave Newhouse with hope, as well as practical skills, jobs, and housing.
