Newport Hotel Group

LEAD Intern

May - August 2018 • Hyannis, MA

What I liked

Among the many things I thoroughly enjoyed about this internship, the skills and experiences I gained and took part in were extremely valuable. The company had a structured action plan in which each intern had the opportunity to explore and train within each department of a hotel. This allowed me to develop strong leadership skills while greatly expanding my knowledge of the hospitality industry. I also liked that the recruiting team for the company held monthly conference calls to check in with the interns and ensure that their work experience was positive. This shows that the company really cares about their emloyees and want to see them succeed.

Lead Intern

What I liked

I want to be completely honest, the only thing I liked about this internship was the fact I was paid. also loved working with my coworkers and other MIT's.

What I wish was different

To start I wish I had a good management team. During my first month or so my manager quit, and then over the course of me being there (4 months) 10 more people quit because they could not handle how we were treated. We would get scheduled working 6 days a week without being asked, or get scheduled 3-11pm and then 7-3pm the next day. When was I expected to sleep? I barely had time to keep up with my school work, and when I addressed this I was told "that is the hospitality business". My school work comes before being there for an internship. During my last semester as an undergrad and starting my masters the last thing I wanted to do was be behind the ENTIRE semester because of this internship. I understand times are tough with covid and everywhere is short staffed, but there was no attempt to even try to work with me so that I was able to get my school work done. Another thing, I wish they would schedule more than one person on a Friday and Saturday night. That was beyond the worst thing ever to be there by yourself. You were constantly running around, having an incredibly huge line a check in, and I never ever had time for dinner. That needs to change or, you will have more people leave to because it is just too much to handle.

Advice

Again, I want to be extremely honest with this review to share with future students. Advice I would give: if you want to give up your life for 4 months go for it. I felt like I had to give up everything because they expect you to be there 24/7. I barely got to see my family, friends, attend doctors appointments. I constantly had to cancel or reschedule till after I completed the internship. I would have guests physically say to me "oh you are still here" because I was constantly there. At points I felt like I never left. Another thing, forget about even trying to make plans. They will constantly change your schedule on you without asking and expect you to be ok with it. You have to be able to help them at ay given point. Lastly, forget about taking time off. I wanted 1 weekend off during the entire 4 months to be able to work on an extremely important project for school and I was denied and told "interns do not take time off". I was shattered, I wanted to be able to sincerely work on that assignment because I knew with the schedules they give me I wouldn't be able to put all my effort in if I was working, and that is what ended up happening.
