Nexteer Automotive

Senior liberal Business Co-OP

January 2023 • Saginaw, MI

What I liked

The pay and ability to work from home so I can still make classes.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more work designed to a business major and not an engineering major.

Advice

Be prepared to have a lot of work at one time, then no work the next week, get work done as soon as possible, and don't procrastinate.

Electrical Engineering Intern

April 2021 • Saginaw, MI

What I liked

Each work term was a different group. Opportunity for a lot of exposure, good networking, and a range of exposure before choosing a final group.

What I wish was different

Pay scale is lower than many other co-op positions. If you live far( I lived 48 miles away) gas can be an issue.

Advice

Even if you end up in a work from home position take the opportunity to work hard and learn all you can. Always ask all team members if they have anything you can work on/help them with/training experiences available.

Quality Co-op

October 2020 • Saginaw, MI

What I liked

Experience gained is as close to an actual salary position you could get while still being a student.

What I wish was different

Lack of tasks gave a lot of downtime.

Advice

Keep good work ethic, the experience is worth the time you put in.

Electrical Engineering Intern

June - August 2020 • Saginaw, MI

What I liked

I enjoyed talking to the people I worked with and how open they were to helping me. Even though I had a virtual internship, I was lucky enough to be able to go on-site a couple days to see the facility and test what I was making. Amazing experience.

What I wish was different

I wish it could've been in person but due to the circumstances, I understand why it had to be virtual. There are pros and cons to having virtual vs. on-site, so hopefully I can experience an on-site internship next year and compare the two.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions! The people I worked with were very helpful and willing to walk me through things that I didn't quite understand. It can be intimidating at first but once you reach out a couple times, it gets easy and you begin to develop strong workplace relationships.

Global Quality Summer Intern

May - September 2019 • Auburn Hills, MI

What I liked

My role at Nexteer seemed simple and rather small scale. However, that was not the case. A little bit about me: I am a Computer Science major, and Graphic Design minor. I figured that having the front-end design experience as well as back-end experience would leverage me about other candidates for any type of software job in the future. But, the switch to CS was mainly due to having the ability to create anything I could imagine. That's the beauty of CS. My role at Nexteer included working in the Quality department under the Global Quality Manager. My tasks were to update and develop training materials used by all employees in Nexteer. Also working on their front-end system for their quality page has proved to be quite the learning experience. The internship overall was amazing. Although the meetings and work was impactful, fun, and intriguing, my favorite part would have to be the breakfast buffets and the lunch buffets. Every day you get to go to breakfast and grab anything you could image, afterwords you can go get any type of coffee, hot chocolate, french vanilla, anything you could imagine was in that machine. Aside from the amazing food I got to work with the best group of people. My boss took me under his wing and introduced me to the corporate working life. There are plenty of corporate jobs out there in the world though, however, it is important to me to pick one that has an impact on everyday life. Nexteer Automotive works on steering columns as well as an abundance of other products. One of the best parts was getting a close up view of their autonomous driving in the works. Aside from all of the food and meaningful work, the relationships I've built with individuals at Nexteer are relationships to last me a lifetime.

What I wish was different

The internship was setup well. Only difference, if possible, that I would like would be the ability to explore other departments to see what type of work is being done around the headquarters.

Advice

Even though this internship was not related to my major, sometimes that's not a bad place to start. Even though it may not be exactly what you want to do, you may still gain knowledgeable life experience out of it.

Industrial Engineering Intern

August 2018 • Saginaw, MI

What I liked

I liked learning everything I could about the automotive industry. There was SO MUCH that I wasn't aware of.

What I wish was different

The plan I was working in was being shut down. I watched a lot of people lose their jobs, and it really killed the morale. I realized that industrial engineering is not the type of engineering I want. I was given a lot of grunt work just making different documents that my boss didn't want to do.

Advice

Ask as many questions as possible, and take initiative. I wish I would have done more to get involved in more challenging tasks.

Sales co-op

January 2017 • Saginaw, MI

What I liked

I started working at Nexteer Automotive as an FCA Sales Co-Op. This summer I had the opportunity to job shadow 6 different function in our plant. Which was in Saginaw. The functions were quality, manufacturing operations/assembly, maintenance, ME, IE, and PC&L. I really enjoyed being able to see the different functions and how they all come together.

What I wish was different

Although all the people I worked with were wonderful, I wish I would have been assigned to work with more FCA related people. Because Nexteer is a supplier to GM, FCA, and Ford, I kind of got a mix of all.

Advice

Plant life is really not as bad as people make it out to be! I actually really enjoyed the culture and the people I worked with :)
