Nexus Brand Group

Digital Marketing Intern

May 2021 • Minneapolis, MN

What I liked

I was told at initially that it would be a different experience to take an internship at a start up versus a prominently established company/corporation. While I was hesitant at first, I haven't looked back or ever regretted my decision. The "different" experience that I've been offered at Nexus has been an opportunity to have more say over my learning experiences. While the core workload is directly related to Ecommerce and primarily Amazon's selling platforms, I've also been able to garner experience and work within fields that I've expressed interest in like advertising. There's been plenty of opportunity to gain experience in a number of different fields of Ecommerce and marketing. The internship is all encompassing and true to it's name. The smaller size of the company gives it a very intimate and personal feel. I've never felt like Chris or Tommy has been too busy when I've had questions. The feel of the company is conducive to a learning environment.

What I wish was different

I wish I had prepared myself more for the level of ambiguity that comes with the position. You have a lot of time to yourself given that the position is remote. This level of freedom and ambiguity was a major adjustment for me initially, as it can be hard to be disciplined and self regulate. However, if you can properly adjust to it, it's a great opportunity for learning. It made me feel trusted and like a core member of the company very quickly.

Advice

Get as much out of the experience that you can. There's so many opportunities and chances to learn and gain experience but you have to be vocal about your level of desire to be put in these positions. As long as you're vocal and prepared for the workload, you'll learn a ton.

What I liked

Nexus Brand Group provides an internship experience unlike most. Interns are given the opportunity to boost their E-Commerce and Marketing skills by working through projects on Amazon, Walmart, eBay and other major platforms. As an intern I learned how to properly manage tasks, write SEO copy, analyze data, and even interface with clients later on in the role. The internship demands advanced time management, problem solving, and analysis skills that prepared me for the full time role I am in now. Given it is a smaller organization, I was able to wear many hats over the course of my internship that allowed me to thrive in business situations post college.

What I wish was different

I wish I had taken an Excel course before the role as proficiency in Excel is a major part of the analysis and tasks.

Advice

Come in with an open mind. Chris and the other employees are there to guide and love when interns ask questions. Collaboration is key for the role and that can be bolstered by asking questions and an eagerness to learn. The best piece of advice I have received in life that applies to this role is "learning and growth comes when you admit what you do not know".

What I liked

It was a great experience to work for a start-up ecommerce company, as I got exposed to all areas of the business. It was an immersive and hands-on job that had the expectation that you will always be uncomfortable in the sense that you will always be learning something new. It was a great team that has clear goals and expectations for themselves. I gained a lot of knowledge on ecommerce as well as a lot of knowledge about how the professional world works. I would highly suggest this internship experience to any who is looking to get into the ecommerce field, entrepreneurs, go-getters, and critical thinkers.

What I wish was different

I wish that there was some more structure and organization to the program, but with this company being a start-up I can't expect the internship program to be top-notch as it is still a work in progress.

Advice

Ask ask ask. I learned this early on in the internship, but always ask questions, even if you feel like you might be annoying others. It is something that I feel like I could have been better with and it ultimately would have improved my experience with the company.
