Niabi Zoo

Biodiversity Intern

October 2022 • Coal Valley, IL

What I liked

I really liked that everyone that I worked with was kind and didn't get upset or annoyed when I had questions.

What I wish was different

I do wish that admissions were open so I could grab my shirts for my first day. I also wish that they had labeled the nutrition center, I just had to hope I was in the right place.

Advice

Don't be afraid of getting dirty or up close with animals. Unless otherwise told by a zookeeper, those animals won't charge or hurt you as long as you stay calm and know where they are.

Animal Care Intern

May - August 2019 • Coal Valley, IL

What I liked

I go to work personally with many of the animals and got to learn their personalities and grew a connection with many of them which is the whole reason I want to further my career in zookeeping

What I wish was different

I could have actually applied for a job there and gotten paid instead of having an unpaid internship

Advice

Expect the unexpected. Anything can happen during a job like this and if you expect to have a routine you will not be prepared for many of the things that might occur on the job.
