Nomura Securities International

IT Analyst

June - August 2021 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I liked meeting and connecting with so many people, gaining exposure to the banking world, and experiencing projects in program management, project management, and UX/UI design.

What I wish was different

I wish it had been in person the whole time. Living in New York City for the summer and getting to know all the interns and co-workers personally would have made it a lot more fun.

Advice

Make sure you brush up on your foundations before starting your first day. Even though it's training, it'll make things easier if you go over business and Excel basics.

Many opportunities to network with professionals in other departments such as investment banking and global markets. Nomura gave all interns an oversight of the different jobs types within their company by having weekly speakers such as traders to discuss their daily work life.

What I wish was different

Operations Summer Analyst

June - August 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

Several different integrated learning sessions. Very flat company structurally -- easy to approach directors. Got to do work that contributed to the team's success, as opposed to being given throwaway projects. They invested a lot of time and money into their interns. They hire for full-time mostly out of the intern program.

What I wish was different

Would have liked a bit more responsibility on the day to day operations of the team.

Advice

Talk to as many people as you can to learn about different career paths and opportunities -- there are many different jobs within an investment bank and people within the firm want to help interns learn and grow. Don't sit around doing nothing during slow days-- shadow the analysts on your team and set up coffee chats with analysts/associates on other teams. Find a way to add value wherever you can. Ask questions and take notes

Summer Technology Analyst

June - August 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

Work culture is amazing. All of my colleagues were supportive and encouraged me to learn more about technologies I was working upon and also shared insight about financial markets. Networking events were awesome and it gave a great opportunity to all interns for networking.

What I wish was different

Wish it was a 12-week internship program rather than 10 weeks.

Advice

Meet people in different teams. Learn about their work and new technologies as much as you can. Ask questions to people, utilize open door policy and network with everyone. If you have got an appetite for more work then put yourself out there and talk to people in different teams to help them on the projects they're working upon. Express your interest/preference and you will get the opportunity to work on multiple projects you like.

Summer Analyst

June - August 2018 • New York City, NY

What I liked

The location and the technical skills I learned. Overall, good exposure to industries and companies I was already familiar with, but also new exciting industries that I never knew much about before. I had a good time expanding my network through full-time, seasoned professionals but also from my fellow summer analyst class. There were great networking and social events planned for us by Human Resources - work hard , play hard environment.

What I wish was different

I wish the summer had been a rotation program rather than working with one team. It would have given us more exposure to other industries and would have allowed us to further expand our network. I feel like the office summer not being able to meet a lot of people who would have offered a lot of great advice and knowledge.

Advice

Be ready to work hard in banking. Mind over matter for the long hours.

What I wish was different

Not everybody at this firm was welcoming and friendly, especially some of the staff in front office.
