Co-Founder of Virtual Summer Camp

June - August 2020 • Nassau, NY

What I liked

I really enjoyed being able to make a difference in the lives of the students with special needs. We were able to provided needed academic support as well as social interaction that were not readily available because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

What I wish was different

I wish we could have found more online resources such as games. We had to create many of the games, PowerPoints, and various activities because we could not find many resources online.

Advice

Plan ahead! If you are thinking of doing something similar, it is important to brainstorm ahead of time to get all the pieces together. Also, do not be afraid to try new things. Sometimes kids will be less receptive to things but that is ok! As long as you are flexible and open to trying different things, chances are you will find something that works.

Tutor/Nanny

June 2016 • Mountain View, CA

What I liked

My major is child and adolescent development. One of the most rewarding aspects, in regards to tutoring is watching the child reach the “Ah-ha” moment where something they’ve been struggling with finally clicks. As for nannying, being able to care for a child and watch them grow is one of the most fulfilling aspects of nannying.

What I wish was different

It was difficult to watch a child struggle with adapting to school fully online and not being able to meet with their teachers or friends because of the pandemic. It would have been nice if situations were handled differently, however it was such an unprecedented time there was really no right way of going about it.

Advice

Children don’t expect for you to be perfect, they expect for you to be honest. It’s okay to make mistakes. Turn those mistakes into teachable moments!
