Finance Intern

April 2019 • Arcata, CA

What I liked

This was not a "make copies and get coffee" internship. I was a valued member of a highly-productive, respected, economic development organization. I took on the role of an actual grant analyst which synthesized all of the accounting experience I had in my coursework with real-world experience. I was introduced to the organizations "big picture," which validated what I've studied in my economics courses. Since I worked at the Lead Center, I was also able to network with directors and staff from 18 centers all across northern California, members of California's GO-Biz office, and even federal SBA employees. This was a great experience that has and continues to provide me with excellent opportunities!

What I wish was different

I can't think of anything that I wish was different. Every experience I had was fruitful.

Advice

Do not expect to slack off or fly under the radar! This is a serious organization that moves quickly and expects professional work from people that want to make a difference in rural economies. Put your best foot forward, find a mentor, and network! This is a great opportunity to gain professional experience and influential relationships. If you work hard, you will be recognized.
