North Central Texas Council of Governments

Legal Services Intern (Risk and Compliance)

July 2022 • Arlington, TX

What I liked

When I first applied to the agency, I had no idea what they did until I conducted some research. NCTCOG is a voluntary organization of local governments covering the DFW Metroplex. The agency values your education and is highly accommodating with your school schedule. My mentor and Program Manager (Supervisor) were always willing to provide me advice on personal growth, future career aspirations, and pursuing higher education. This is really great position for Business Majors!

What I wish was different

I wish I could interact with the interns more and discover more about what they do in their project teams. We all had varied schedules, so I only spoke to just a few of them on the days I was in the office.

Advice

Prepare to take a lot of notes because you will be learning about numerous project teams in the Transportation department. As a Legal Services intern, you will work with various project teams such as Transit, Air Quality, FMT, and so on. Network with full-time members of other project teams and directors! They'll be happy to assist you in making the switch from an intern to a full-time position if you express that you'd like to work there after graduation.

Fiscal Management Intern

October 2018 • Arlington, TX

What I liked

NCTCOG is a highly respected government agency in the metroplex, so having an internship with them on your resume is a great opportunity.

What I wish was different

FMT does not teach you much in regards to how the agency is ran or government regulations. I eventually switched departments in order to have more hands on experience.

Advice

If you want to intern with NCTCOG, choose a department outside of FMT, otherwise you will mainly be filing really old documents away and cleaning up messes that were made back in the 90s. The planning teams, outreach, admin, and legal services allow their interns to do real salary-employee work to gain experience.

Fiscal Management Intern

October 2018 • Arlington, TX

What I liked

They were very quick to get back to me after I initially applied to set up an interview and then again for a second interview. They provided me with plenty of information on the company and who would be interviewing me beforehand. The company really cares about how well you are doing in school and is extremely flexible with schedules. My immediate supervisor is always kind and very willing to teach.

What I wish was different

I honestly can't think of anything that would make this internship better. They go above and beyond, especially for a paid internship.

Advice

Be prepared to learn a lot of things on your own and keep up with various programs. This is an intricate position and deals with federal and local governments, so you have to stay on top of what you're doing.
