What I liked

I really loved the high level of exposure I got in various medical specialties, and I appreciate the mentors I met along the way. This is an amazing experience if you are an Illinois resident and are considering medical school or want to explore different medical specialties. I got to shadow in the ER, OR, and everywhere in between!

What I liked

I really enjoy being in the hospital environment and feeling like I am helping a cause. I also love that I could observe professionals in the career field of my choice and learn from them.

What I wish was different

I wish volunteers could get more hands-on patient care but unfortunately, we do not have that opportunity.

It's okay if you feel like you are not doing anything. They wouldn't have had you there if they thought they didn't need you!

What I liked

I love working in healthcare because it is ever changing and there are so many opportunities for people in IT which you would never think of unless you were presented with them. I also love the fact that I get to work with people of all backgrounds, from doctors and nurses, to finance and HR professionals. I feel I am truly getting the most out of my experience here.

I wish we were able to work in person in the office this summer.

What I liked

The amount of experiences to learn from. Flexibility with remote work during COVID. Constructive and educational culture, opportunities for extension, connections.

What I wish was different

I wish I got to explore more hands on work with other teams in IT but because of COVID, I mostly worked in my team.

Advice

Always seek opportunities to learn and also to contribute your own skills. Communicate with your team frequently. Get as much hands-on experience as possible, and always be enthusiastic about what you're working on!

Each student was paired with a physician researcher and engaged in a summer long clinical research experience. There was also a large amount of shadowing within your assigned department and also one day a week we rotated through different specialties.

What I wish was different

Nothing, my mentor was incredible and I got to see a lot about the world of medicine.

Wellness assistant/ IMPACT instructor

What I liked

I really enjoyed my ability to explore multiple avenues in the health system. I was mostly did IMPACT testing for youth sports teams (Concussion testings). Which gave me a lot of experience working with children and adults. I also was able to work with physical therapist an also athletic trainers. I thought that experience was very important to see what health care has to offer. I also liked that i was given a sense of responsibility to make sure IMPACT testing went smoothly and also completing my project for my supervisor which was a five week health program.

What I wish was different

I wish that i could have gone into my internship with a much clearer idea on what i wanted to do for a career. Because i didn't know specifically what i wanted to do, i was bounced around to see a lot of different careers, so networking was a little difficult.

Advice

Network as best as you can, always be cheerful and make sure you assert your self so people remember who you are and what your name is. Your only there for summer so you want to make a strong impression so they remember you down the road.

I liked that my team was dedicated to improving the lives of the residents in an underserved community. Those values were at the center of the research and it made it a fulfilling experience.

I wish I had more time to work on projects. I was balancing classes and my internship.

Make yourself useful at all times. Be willing to show up early, stay late, and learn. Be friendly and genuinely interested in others.

I got to learn about the healthcare industry from an IT standpoint. It was really interesting to see how a huge non-profit organization is able to provide quality care to patients.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been on a different IT team that had a more clinical application. This is mainly because I personally want to have a direct impact to patient care.

What I liked

I got to create meaningful career and college readiness programming for first-generation HS students interested in pursuing careers in medicine. As the STEM specialist in the team, I got to create content to prepare my students for the rigors of college-level math and science, and hosted them at IIT for hands-on labs.

What I wish was different

I wish that we had more time pre and post program to develop the content and to finalize grading.

Advice

I was able to network extensively through the program, and I got to connect with physicians since that is the route I want to pursue in the future. However, working in this position gives you access to any facet of healthcare that you might be interested in pursuing, not just clinical.
