Northwestern Mutual Wealth Management Company

College Financial Representative

May 2018 • Richmond, VA

What I liked

Great company with a fantastic atmosphere. Everyone in the company wants you to succeed and will provide all resources to make this an amazing opportunity. The work was sometimes hard, but you learn SO much for your professional and personal life!

What I wish was different

Often candidates are turned away because they are not interested in the commission pay, but you get paid what you work for. There is no limit to what you can do while you're there.

Advice

Work hard, take the material and advice they give you everyday, and make every moment worth it.

Financial Representative Intern

May 2018 • Boca Raton, FL

What I liked

As an intern with Northwestern, incoming representatives receive the same licenses as first-year full-time reps just starting out. Interns are encouraged to split their cases with senior advisors within the office network, which allowed for an excellent hands on learning experience in this business.

What I wish was different

While I understand the same situation would arise with any other firm, the only thing I wish was different was finding new leads.

Advice

This is a merit-based role. What you put into it you will get out of it.

What I liked

The staff was very welcoming and they practice what they preach on terms of productivity. The offices were very cohesive with an overwhelming support for growth of the interns.

What I wish was different

Closer commute to home.

Advice

Commission-based salaries provide incentive to work hard. Asking questions helped me understand the business and professional lifestyle of an advisor.

Recruitment Coordinator

June 2018 • Walnut Creek, CA

What I liked

I loved everything about the office and the people in it. Great environment full of supportive people who want you to succeed and grow. I loved learning new skills.

What I wish was different

Nothing. I wish I worked more hours.

Advice

Always choose the people/office and not the job. Being in a great environment while maybe not having the exact job you want is better than having your dream job and everyday of work because you hate everyone around you.

College Financial Representative

May 2018 • Sioux City, IA

What I liked

It was a very unique opportunity. It allowed me to see the sales side of insurance and exposed me to some real life situational business. It forced me out of my comfort zone, it was a great learning experience for me.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have done a little better. The objective was to sell as many policies as possible as it was mostly commission based, so obviously a little more money would have been the cherry on top.

Advice

Don't be afraid to step into a roll like this even if you know it's going to be uncomfortable and not necessarily enjoyable all the time. It may not be what you want to do, but real life experience trumps anything you can learn from reading a book or turning in homework assignments.

Development Tool Engineer Intern

May - August 2018 • Milwaukee, WI

What I liked

There were many awesome events held for interns. Coworkers in the company were nice and helpful and HRs were responsible. Also, there was free lunch everyday with many options and nice working area with Starbucks in the building! I had a lot of fun with HRs, coworkers and all other interns.

What I wish was different

It would be better if interns can be provided internship plan layout about tasks, goals and expectations for the whole internship at beginning. I got random tasks during the internship, but some interns got well planned tasks for the summer. Anyway, I still learned a lot when the internship ended.

Advice

Get out of your comfort zone and get to know as many people as you can, you will have an amazing summer!

More consistent pay and better technology within the company

Advice

Don't give up. A lot of people wil tell you what you are doing isn't going to work out. Be the judge for yourself and give it some time, then decide if its worth it!
