Nucor Vulcraft Indiana

Sales Engineer Intern

May - August 2023 • Fairborn, OH

What I liked

Throughout my internship with Nucor, what stood out to me most was the incredible personal work culture at every location. No matter where I was, everyone I met was willing and eager to help me grow and develop my professional skills and share their wealth of knowledge on the impressive landscape that is the steel industry. Everyone in the Dayton sales office had an open door policy, and they were always willing to answer my questions and offer advice. One notable thing about Nucor as a whole is there love for people. This is seen everyday in the workplace with their ever-present "safety-first" mindset. As an intern, this was seen in how much they cared about our development and understanding. They went above and beyond to provide us with experiences and knowledge so we would be well-versed for any project or situation.

What I wish was different

There isn't much I'd change about this summer. One thing to note is that with sales, it's hard to find big projects for interns that actually contribute to the company. In turn, our final project was more of a simulation of a real project. However, the experience and skills gained through this project experience were invaluable. The design aspects and multiple presentations (while stressful), pushed me to grow in my professional and engineering skills.

Advice

I would recommend to never stop asking questions. An inquisitive mind is welcome and encouraged at Nucor, and the conversations I had throughout my internship were the best part about it. The people at Nucor are what make it such an incredible place to work and it would be a shame to not take advantage of their presence and scope of knowledge. Another thing that I would recommend is to push yourself. That comes hand in hand with asking questions. Always be asking: "What else can I do?", "How else can I help?" and "What else can I learn?".

What I liked

Thoroughly enjoyed my time at Vulcraft. I was in a Sales Engineer Internship role for a summer term with the Dayton Outside Sales Office. The Dayton office had an "open-door" policy, which permitted me to ask anybody just about anything. The entire office was extremely dedicated to developing its interns and made us a part of the team. Great overall experience and I would recommend it to anyone interested in sales engineering!

1 Day Job Shadow

What I liked

It was a great experience! I was paired up with a new engineer for a day, she showed me around the facilities and clearly explained day-to-day work and projects by demonstrating on the computer the different options and systems used to analyze and meet customer requests. I was also given a tour of the shop, where the welding and assembly of all the products take place. The entire team was extremely welcoming and open to questions, even allowing me to pop into their offices to discuss topics I was interested in. The experience will truly be what you make of it, as they are extremely flexible to ensure you learn the most you can. I came in with very little background, however, they were very good and patient at explaining the basic concepts and processes to me as well. I would truly recommend this experience, especially to civil, mechanical, or industrial engineers.

What I wish was different

It is a bit of a drive to get there with not too much nearby, so you may want to account for that, with the closest big city, Fort. Wayne being about a 30min drive away. However, they do work with steel, so this is not uncommon and the drive can be quite relaxing.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions. It's ok that you may not have a firm understanding of the process or concepts initially, just be open to learning and make sure you ask when in doubt.
