NYC Office of Chief Medical Examiner

Audit and Accounts Intern

July - August 2016 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I liked that it was my first internship experience and I got the chance to witness the operations of a business. I was in the Audit and Accounts Department, but I was also able to go down to the Purchasing Department and do a count of inventory.

What I wish was different

I wish the work a bit more challenging. Once you get accustomed to a department's role and procedures, it can become repetitive and boring.

Advice

No matter if you get bored or you feel like you aren't being challenged, use that time to network with other departments. Talk to your supervisor about their experience and how they got to where they are at. Also if you feel like you aren't being challenged, talk to your supervisor and see if they can come up with a project for you. Also, don't be afraid to voice any ideas you have, whether it be a change of software or a different way to approach situations.

Communications Intern

July - August 2018 • New York City, NY

What I liked

The exposure to criminal justice field in addition to the myriad of lectures that the office offered to educate and inform interns on various topics of interest. In addition, they were very accommodating and extremely flexible in making shift schedules for interns.

What I wish was different

I wish I had a more hands-on experience rather than working in the office the entire time. The communications department regularly sends out a team which is one of the greatest highlights of the job that was unfortunately limited only to staff.

Advice

Everyone is very warm and welcome but don't let that distract you from the very professional and serious atmosphere in regards to their work.

Audits and Accounts Intern

July - August 2017 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I liked how interns were allowed to shadow their supervisors to learn from them directly. Moreover, the weekly intern events were interesting, especially with events that expose interns to the inside work of the organization, including autopsy demonstrations.

Advice

A piece of advice I would share would be to always be professional. Even if an assignment is not particularly interesting or exciting, always put in your full effort to do it.
