Retail Communications Intern

June - August 2018 • El Segundo, CA

What I liked

I liked the location and actual facilities. And the free makeup. The HR team did a great job with the intern program in terms of socializing with other interns. The 10 of us there for the summer really got to know another and had a great bond.

What I wish was different

I wish the people had been more engaging and had taken the time to develop and mentor me. I spent about thirty minutes total with my manager a week and had no real tasks to accomplish week to week. I packed a lot of boxes and mailed a lot of papers to the retail stores my team worked it. No one cared about me as a person and I would really try to connect with the team and get involved. At the end of the day, everyone was "too busy" to work with me or expose me to the business. I would have loved to sit in the back of a room and listen in on meetings and business problems. A year-long intern that had worked there for over 8 months noticed that I was disappointed after being ignored for a second time on my main project and told me I should "get use to being disappointed. That's just how it works here. Everyone is busy and there stuff is more important."

Advice

Don't work here if you're a W.P. Carey student. You won't be challenged or expected to use the business knowledge you have gained throughout your time in college. You won't be appreciated as a young professional or treated like so. In all seriousness, I think I would like to share that you have to pursue what you think you would like to do and not be upset when it doesn't work out that way you thought it would.
