What I liked

I like how I was able to get a job on campus after I graduated. Working for Spectra and in the event planning industry allows you to see many different kinds of events. Which I think is awesome.

What I wish was different

I wish I was more prepared/know how to negotiate my pay.

Advice

The one piece of advice I will give is always provided/bring your work availability with you when you go to an employer. You need to be able to tell them when you can and can not work.

What I liked

As my first formal employment, I enjoyed getting to know the ins and outs of having a job with structure and a hierarchy. I worked at my local Triple-A minor league baseball stadium for Spectra, and I liked getting to be around a sport I enjoy while also gaining valuable skills in the field (so to speak). I made $11 per hour and I received healthy tips. When you have never had an independent source of income, that feels like a lot! It required a lot of standing and running around, but it certainly wasn't "just a desk job." If I had a choice, I wouldn't have chosen to work anywhere else just starting off.

What I wish was different

There weren't enough positions. Although there are only so many tasks based on part-time staff roles, I often found myself off of work or simply not scheduled because someone else was selected for that time slot.

Advice

I think this is an excellent first job for young people in particular. I had no prior work experience, but was able to serve multiple roles and gain a significant amount of knowledge that I could apply to a future career. For anyone concerned with lack of ability, trust me - you will get trained, and what once required deliberation will become almost reflexive over time. This type of job is perfect to make good money over the summer!
