Oakland University

Camp Coordinator

February 2019 • Rochester, MI

What I liked

I loved my coworkers and the job itself. It was exactly the kind of internship I would have wanted, especially coming from a philosophy background and not expecting much. I love interacting with high school age students, and I love sharing my passion for philosophy. This was the best part!

What I wish was different

I wish the organization of the job had been a bit different, but it was the first year it was ever a paid position. It was understandably in its grassroots stages.

Advice

I would advise to go after a job that comes your way that sounds appealing! I almost passed this offer up because I thought I wouldn't have enough time. I did it anyway, and I don't regret it.

Access Services Assistant

March 2019 • Rochester Hills, MI

What I liked

I liked the shift availability and the flexibility of the job itself. My shifts work around my classes, and if I need one off that can be worked around, and I'm able to pick up shifts too. This job builds upon people and communication skills, and during your shift you can work on homework and other stuff as well, which is really nice and convenient. Everyone on staff is also super nice. It's a great job, whether it's your first one or not!

Undergraduate Researcher

May - August 2019 • Rochester, MI

What I liked

I liked being able to create my own schedule as long as I met the required weekly hours discussed with my mentor. I also liked working on a single project all summer that contributed to a gap in current research that exists, it gave me a great sense of purpose.

What I wish was different

It is a little hard to only make $4,000 for the whole summer because I used the money I make during the summer as my spending money for the school year.

Advice

I would encourage anyone going into the science field to apply because a publication is a great addition to a resume and the flexibility this job has is very nice.

Media Center Development Intern

May - September 2019 • Rochester Hills, MI

What I liked

Relaxed schedule, the professors I worked with were approachable and available for contact when needed. Working alone provided an opportunity for personal growth, I made my own schedule and reported back when I had made ample progress on my objective.

What I wish was different

Felt alone at times, my work space was a computer lab so some weeks I would come in and leave with very little interaction apart from emails (later worked in Oakland center). Had an uncomfortable altercation with one of the professors early on, but this served as a growing opportunity on respect and communication that benefited me in the long run.

Advice

Make goals for yourself, there is endless value in learning to be self-reliant. Being proactive might mean making a few mistakes, but you don't learn if you don't try.
