Oaknoll Retirement Home

Volunteer

August 2017 - February 2019 • Iowa City, IA

What I liked

The residents and staff of Oaknoll are some of the friendliest people that I've been around. They were all very welcoming and patient with me and other new volunteers that were familiarizing themselves with the building and our tasks. The Thursday evening programs were the highlight of my time there because they allowed me to interact with many of the residents, and also learn something new from the guest speaker of the night.

What I liked

Oaknoll provides residents, staff, and volunteers the most positive and welcoming environment. It's an environment that genuinely cares and aims to provide an atmosphere for all to be in good health and spirits. The relationships built with residents are far beyond incredible. I was able to impact them as much as they impacted me. My volunteer experience at Oaknoll never felt like a chore, but rather became an experience I was eager to attend. The staff and residents made Oaknoll feel like a home away from home. There was never a day where I felt unwelcome or that my time spent there wasn't valuable.

Advice

When you visit Oaknoll to work with residents or spend time with them, make sure you want to be there. Leave any stress or personal problems outside the door and just absorb the experience of being with some of the best people the world has to offer. The staff and residents of Oaknoll deserve the best you have to offer, so I highly suggest showing up ready to be present with them as they are with you. If you do this, only great experiences are to come!

What I liked

When I stumbled across a volunteer posting for Oaknoll during my sophomore year in 2015, I had no idea how much of an impact this opportunity would have on my life. I was welcomed by Brianna, Oaknoll's Volunteer Coordinator, who provided me with exceptional training and continues to be one of my greatest mentors. Brianna had faith in my abilities, which allowed me to develop and strengthen my leadership qualities and confidence. I have made great friends with fellow volunteers and staff and continue to be inspired by the amazing residents - all who have truly made a difference in my life. As an alumni with a full-time job, volunteer shifts or random drop-ins at Oaknoll continue to be the highlight of my busy days. Whether you are a student, alumni, or community member, I would greatly encourage you to get involved at Oaknoll!

What I liked

I have been volunteering at Oaknoll since my first-year of law school. It has been an absolutely incredible experience. I have learned so much about myself as a person while volunteering here. The staff is so helpful, and the Volunteer Coordinator, Brianna Becker, is passionate about growth experiences for all the volunteers! She was patient with my busy law school schedule and always there to answer questions when I needed them. If you are looking for somewhere to volunteer whether you're a student, long-term Iowa City resident, or just looking for ways to get involved in the community - I would definitely recommend volunteering at Oaknoll!
