Junior Accountant

What I liked

Having on-the-job experience as a student studying Finance has been incredible for me. I have been able to learn a piece of the Finance industry. This job has given me the ability to further grasp what I learn at school and it has also given me insight into the responsibilities of different job positions. I've learned what I am interested in pursuing and what I could not see myself applying for when looking for a job. Overall, there has been so much to learn by being an employee at Ocean for the past year and a half. I'm am very grateful for the opportunity.

What I wish was different

Learning to balance work and school has been a challenge and something I'm working to get better at each day.

Advice

If you have the opportunity to become an intern, please go for it! And even better if it's in your field of study. Any experience you can get before graduating is beneficial- not only for your resume, but for honing in on what you'd like to pursue after graduating. If you do receive and accept the offer of an internship, ask questions and learn all you can while being there! Really get to know the industry/company, and people (connections are an important thing because you never know when you may cross paths with that person again, or maybe they know someone that can give you an opportunity you've always hoped for! You never know) Most importantly, above all the great benefits internships can give you, be grateful for the opportunity! As students, we are working hard in school to learn all we can and prepare ourselves for life after college. It's an exciting concept to think about. Internships are stepping stones towards your future, just as your education is. And whether the experience was worthwhile or not exactly the best, learn from it!

Advice

Being in sales for fast fashion industries will open your eyes to how wasteful and unethical fast fashion is. It will allow you to see the real cost of things, and learn all the ways in which customers are scammed. If you work in sales be ready to start thinking different about how you view shopping and the power dynamics in this country that affect the consumer. Don’t overwork yourself for a capitalist corporation that is exponentially profiting off your labor but isn’t fairly compensating you for it.
