Research Assistance

June - August 2018 • Dumaguete, Negros Oriental

What I liked

This was an amazing experience. I had the opportunity to attend a 3 weeks Bioinformatics Workshop instructed by many talented professors and scientists from United States. I also attended an one week IUCN res list assessment workshop/training. I had the change to conduct my own research project. I was able to finish my research on time with appropriate and logical results. At the end, I also had the opportunity to present my project and results in a scientific symposium in front of many scientists, undergraduate and graduate students and professor in the field of science. For my research project, I looked at the microbial diversity in Leiognathus equulus ( Common pony-fish). I collected my samples from three different bays of Negros Island, Philippines. I used culture-depended method to culture my bacterial samples and used colony-morphology analysis to count the bacterial colonies. I also ran an one-way ANOVA with my data to further analysis. In addition, I experience living in a different country where environments are very different from my usual life-style. I also had the chance to explore various island of Philippines near Negros Island.

What I wish was different

I really did everything this summer. I explored, did research, made new friends and connections. I wouldn't have done anything differently than what I have done.

Advice

This summer I learned, how important it is to be open minded when you are part of a group. Always try to look for the best qualities in people. No matter how different a person is from you, I believe it is very possible to find good qualities in them that you like. Always try to get out of your comfort zone and never be afraid to try something new. You never know, you might have the best experience in your life on something that you never liked before.
