District intern

May - August 2018 • San Diego, CA

What I liked

I really enjoyed getting hands-on experience of managing the front office for Congresswoman Susan Davis. Working at the front desk gave me a unique perspective of the daily routine of a congressional office involving walk-in constituents, groups with arranged meetings, and much more. I also enjoyed being able to be sort of being a spokesman for the Congresswoman, since I answered all the phone calls directed to the office and spoke to hundreds of people.

What I wish was different

I wish the school would have been more flexible with the stipens that they gave out. Not knowing my stipen amount that my internship gave me until after May 4th prevented me from requesting money from LMU. Therefore, all the money I got from the stipen given to me by the office was spent on gas.

Advice

I would advise future interns at Congressional offices to take every opportunity to go to every event that you are invited to because not only will you learn how politics works out in the field, you’ll also meet people that you may come into contact with again one day.
