Working as a Senate intern as a recent high school graduate is a unique experience that I thoroughly enjoyed. I liked that I got to work personally with office in areas which interested me, such as Alaskan energy. I also made many contacts which was beyond priceless as a young prospective policy maker. It was also really cool to explore the Capitol and the Hill.
What I wish was different
One thing that can be a hardship is that housing is arranged by the intern coordinator, but you must pay for it yourself.
Advice
The biggest piece of advice that I initially received and now would like to pass on is that an experience like this is meant to be taken as an opprotunity to learn for yourself. Don't go into a congressional internship thinking you're a hot shot ready to debate congress people. You assist your senator and take in as much wisdom, information, and advice you can.
