I was able to explore skills that I would otherwise not have been able to practice and develop; skills like strategic marketing, graphic design, and professional office communication were things I was always interested in but was finally able to develop through this summer job. I could have worked on any skill, but this office made it a priority to help me develop in the ways that I wanted to.
They were also very flexible around my summer class schedule, while still giving me plenty opportunity to work a full amount of hours every week.
What I wish was different
I did end up having to work remotely, so I wish circumstances had been different in that way. However, were circumstances like normal, I would have never been offered this job since I was planning on studying abroad in Spain before the trip got cancelled.
Advice
There is a lot to learn from in this position since it is geared toward students with interest in leadership. It is more than just in-office work experience, it is an apprenticeship with people who care about your development in whatever ways you want to grow!
So, ask for advise (ask questions about everything, really!) and don't be afraid to talk about the skills you feel you need to work on.

What I liked
The office is highly organized, which leads to a summer of fun but also efficiency. My coworkers were great and I loved meeting all of the new students.
What I wish was different
I wouldn't change a thing about my summer.
Advice
Definitely take time to decompress for yourself, the job can be very high stress and it is long, so take time to relax and not think about work.

Orientation Mentor

What I liked
I loved getting to help a team of 14 amazing undergraduate students develop their leadership style and ability. The Assistant Director of the office is wonderful to work with/for and made the experience that much better! I also really enjoyed the opportunity to get to work with the incoming students and their families.
What I wish was different
The hours are hard, but that comes with the position.
Advice
Invest in and trust your teammates!

Orientación Leader
May - July 2019 • Dallas, TX
What I liked
My colleagues and mentors are what made my experience as an Orientation Leader this summer fantastic. I loved having the chance to meet incoming students and share my experiences and advice for making the transition to college life.
What I wish was different
That’s a tough one. I would say the Stampede Guide training could have been shortened to one day instead of two to respect the time of the Guides. But other than that, I wouldn’t change a thing.
Advice
I would highly encourage anyone considering the role to apply. It’s a once in a lifetime experience, and I am so glad I did it!

Orientation Leader
January - August 2018 • Dallas, TX
What I liked
I loved the experience and professionalism found in everyone employed at the Office of the Student Experience.
What I wish was different
I wish that this position hadn't required me to spend the entire summer away from home, but I wouldn't trade my summer experience for anything.
Advice
Be prepared not only to do logistical work but to provide emotional support to the hundreds of students that you meet throughout the summer. Those students look up to you and rely on you to not leave them feeling lost in the maze that is college. They will continue to look up to you throughout the rest of your time here on campus as well. This job doesn't only give you experience, it gives you lasting relationships with your employers, your teammates, and the students that you meet.
