This internship provided me with the opportunity to learn about all of the different jobs that a Senator's office does. I was able to write to constituents to help them with their issues, attend different events with Senator Grassley- such as going to the Iowa State Fair-meet Vice President Pence, explore the Des Moines Neil Smith Federal Building's many agencies, and be a part of the team that is responsible for making sure constituent concerns and opinions are delivered to the Senator, as well as helping solve some of the problems constituents had. Interns are exposed to many new experiences and I think for most, they will be exciting and allow one to truly feel like they are part of the team.
What I wish was different
I wish I could have done more to help out. There is so much to do and I wish I had more time to dig into more of the complexities of the casework.
Advice
If you are in doubt, give the office you are applying to a call and ask what the internship is all about. Everyone I worked with was fantastic. The team in the Des Moines office was always willing to answer my questions and was always working to make sure I got the most, I could, out of the internship. Ask as many questions as you can, the more you know, the more you can help out. In this internship, you get out what you put into it.
