Software Engineering Intern

What I liked

Omnitech delivers an excellent internship in the heart of South Dakota. They provide a welcoming and supportive environment to help you learn as much as possible during your internship. The internship is continually refined to make sure that it can help every student succeed. It's divided up into separate phases, each with a focus on a different area of software development and a varying team size. The sherpas were also a great help in guiding us along the whole way and always were there to offer advice or just to be a rubber duck. The internship is in-person, but to relieve the stress of living in a new city, they provide housing and food for the summer so you don't need to worry about it. You'll hear time and time again about the learning environment at Omnitech and it's true. Not only do interns have Lunch & Learns everyday, but we also got to meet with many full time employees through code-a-longs and Intern L&L's where they walk us through a more specific day-to-day operations at Omnitech and deliver insight on what it means to be a consultant.

Advice

Don't be afraid to reach out to others for help. Talking things through with sherpas or other interns is the fastest way to improve your code and programming skills. The projects they assign you can seem daunting at first, but you'll be surprised how quickly you can grow.

What I liked

Omnitech works with you to grow your skill set. They have a work environment where learning and sharing information is not only common, but encouraged and incentivized. They gave us fun outside of work activities to do like disc golf, picnics, and an escape room. They also bought lunch every single day. The engineers were extremely helpful at every turn in the road, which made running into issues less stressful.

Advice

Its okay to fail. The engineers at Omnitech do not have high expectations for what you're going to know coming in. They are there to help you grow from where you're at, not push you to your breaking point. If you are struggling reach out for help because everyone will be helpful and understanding.

What I liked

My favorite part of Omnitech is the people; they are unbelievable kind, welcoming, patient, and knowledgeable. They make it clear what you should be doing during the internship and will push you to grow as a professional, but are not demanding or negative at all. They take the time to understand where you are at and do everything they can to help you grow from there. The environment is positive and focused on learning and growth for both interns and professionals alike. With that comes a focus on knowledge sharing, which is an incredible opportunity to learn from those who have been in the industry a long time and have invaluable advice and knowledge to share.

What I wish was different

I can't think of a single thing that I would have changed about my internship experience. It was very enjoyable and I learned and progressed more than I thought was possible. Every aspect of the internship was well thought out, professional, and helpful.

Advice

Work with a company like Omnitech that will value you as a person and strive to help you grow in every aspect of your professional life. As an intern, I was given projects to work on, professional feedback, and personal advice. I would suggest going into this internship with humility, a desire to learn and improve, and an open mind for community and friendship. I cannot recommend it enough.

What I liked

Omnitech is fast paced and you get to learn as much as you can take in every single day. You get access to talk to over 30 other software engineers that are always happy to help you learn! You will not feel like you are just given busy work to do over the summer. I learned more in two summers here at Omnitech than I learned from all the classes I have taken in school combined! The internship is well structured and thought out, but while still giving you the freedom to explore and learn in areas you are interested in learning more about. Another great thing is being able to still work for Omnitech during the school year from the Rapid City office located right on campus. I could go to class in the morning and then go right over to the office to learn more and make a few extra bucks during the school year. Also- catered food every single day I have worked here and we eat lunch together everyday, discussing various software topics. We call them Lunch & Learns!

What I wish was different

Everything has exceeded my expectations for an internship- especially with what I hear about other peoples software engineering internship expectations.

Advice

I did not have much knowledge at all about the tech stack that we work with at Omnitech so I was a little afraid of not being able to do well, but if you can be open to learning new things, tackling new problems every day, and collaborating with other engineers- you would be a perfect fit here. I love coming to work here every single day.

What I liked

I really appreciate how Omnitech promotes learning and sharing experiences. During the internship, I learned from many of the full time engineers about the software development process and how to approach difficult problems. These skills prepared me well to continue working on my Senior Design project during the school year and now into full-time work. Omnitech is a great place to try new things and learn from some great people!

What I liked

Omnitech has a a great focus on its learning culture. Throughout the summer we had the opportunity to learn from a variety of engineers to improve our skills and gain a broad understanding of the problem solving skills needed in our field. There was never any hesitation for engineers throughout the company to share what they know in order to improve the learning experience. The broad exposure to different technologies and practices gave me confidence in my skills going into the workplace post-graduation.

What I liked

I liked the atmosphere that Omnitech had. They are really focused on their employees learning, and that includes interns. They understand the field moves quickly so they do everything they can to keep their engineers up to date. They also have their interns work on real projects and not just have them do busy work.

What I wish was different

I wish the internship had been longer. I learned a lot in the time that I was there, I just wish I could have been there longer to keep learning more.

Advice

When you enter the field as a full time software engineer, you need to have a drive to learn. Find a company that allows you to, and gives you the opportunities to learn more and also encourages you to become better at your job.
