Industrial Engineering Intern

June - August 2022 • Kernersville, NC

What I liked

It was a super small and personal environment, and the job itself was pretty laid back most of the time. I got my own office and the people were all very nice. It was also amazing as an introduction to a manufacturing environment, even if the actual processes were a little unorthodox.

What I wish was different

I wish I’d had more people to work with and more of a team setting. My immediate supervisor was also a supervisor for pretty much half the shop, being the only actual engineer working on similar stuff to what I was doing. It was hard to get ahold of him though and there was a communication gap. Many times it felt like I was stuck in between him and the plant workers. The learning curve for industrial engineering principles was also probably more difficult at this plant, than one that was already following 5S fairly well. I believe I would’ve done a bit better with more experience, but I can’t say for sure.

Advice

The pay is good and the people are nice, I recommend taking more initiative, “bothering” people a bit more, and not always waiting around for permission before changing things if it makes sense.
