Outlier

AI Trainer

January 2024 • Austin, TX

What I liked

Nothing. I am going to report this quote-unquote "employer".

What I wish was different

I wish that it had matched the job description and the invitation from the Outlier recruiter. I was pitched a smooth platform and $35/hour. That rate is high, but reasonable, so I just thought they were well-funded. I feel ridiculous now. What I got was an empty task feed, an organization without any clear infrastructure or basic presence, and (after weeks of emails with tech support, which ironically may have just been a response bot) an invitation to a $1.50/hr, ONE DOLLAR AND FIFTY CENTS PER HOUR project.

Advice

DO NOT FALL FOR THIS. This is about as close to a scam that you can get without giving out bank information or being promised reimbursement for office supplies. I don't know what Outlier is getting out of all this, but they definitely aren't as they appear. Do not believe the listed pay rate and do not fall for the description. I'm glad that they aren't legitimate enough to link payments through anything but Paypal, but even with that I am genuinely worried about what they'll do with the onboarding information I gave them. I've reported them to my university's career center; I hope the Handshake admin team will take them off soon. In the meantime, DO NOT APPLY TO OUTLIER.

What I liked

Nothing. Honestly, it's very misleading. I will stay on board incase it changes and I receive some progress. Ill give it a month.

What I wish was different

The entire process is so far a lie. It says it's hourly but there is no indication of this after joining. In addition, it's not $41 as it was advertised to be. You get paid per gig so not all tasks will be the same amount. It's a gig freelance work meaning you may not always have work to do. There is no training for how to work the job. There is no trainer, and no manager to contact for help. Nothing. As of now, I was onboarded, with no training or guidance. I have "projects" but I can't find a way to start them. The contact support listed treats you as if you are a customer, not a worker. You can't call anyone, you have to email and it takes 3-5 days to get back. If you have any questions, you are on your own. I have refused to input my PayPal account due to the fact I am not receiving any help. The onboarding process is dismal at best. A lot of other people have also reported that they have been on for a month and have little to no work or also struggle with onboarding.

Advice

Have an onboarding process. People are just thrown in with only a 2 min video to help. There is no explanation, help, or training. Not even someone to help guide people. Make a more direct form of communication. It feels more like a discord server than a company.
