Field engineer

June - September 2021 • San Luis Obispo, CA

What I liked

I enjoyed being in San Luis Obispo the entire summer and getting to work outside was a blast.

What I wish was different

PCL over-hired and all of the interns had little work to do the entire summer.

Advice

Be cautious about PCL and other large construction companies, your work is less appreciated than smaller companies.

Field Engineer Intern

May - August 2019 • Orlando, FL

What I liked

My experience was half in the office working closely with the project manager and project engineer, and the second half of the summer I was out on the job site working closely with the superintendent and project engineer. I liked how I saw both the field and office side of the project so that I would be able to do quality work out in the field and it would be in such a way that was beneficial to office people, and vice versa.

What I wish was different

There's not much that I would have wished that would have been different.

Advice

One piece of advice I would share is be willing to make mistakes. It's great to ask questions, but also taking ownership of a project and trying to do a task on your own and even messing up shows that you care about the project and you are willing to put in the work to benefit the team.

Field Engineer

May - August 2019 • Breckenridge, CO

What I liked

The time on the field delegating a handful of trades and driving out their scope. Delegating trades and documenting quality control as our GC8.3 project was coming to closure. Managing trades by answering specification and shop drawing questions, pushing the schedule, punching areas with trades and owner, closing in on all deficiencies and any items that would hold us up for CO, and assuring safety regulations- PSI/ workmanship/ PPE. Also, complete a couple of pre-pour checklists. Documented finished concrete and oversaw the pour to avoid any mistakes. Managed the inventory for all accessories within the project; partitions, hand-dryers, grab bars, mirrors, etc. Well involved and knowledgeable with the scope of interior trades.

What I wish was different

The length of my internship! I wish summer was not so short and that would have extended my time on the job site.

Advice

Whether it is something you know or have no idea about, go all in! Internships are about learning if this meets your expectations and if you can see yourself long term. Also, its great to look at it as a 3 month interview for you and the employer. If the shoes does not fit from either side, why wear it. Ask tons of questions!
