project engineer

May - August 2019 • Sandston, VA

What I liked

I loved how the internship director assigned real engineering work! I was assigned 3 separate projects, but 1 project was the main focus of the summer so I learned how to juggle multiple projects at once. All projects required understanding of mechanics, electrics, and manufacturing, leaving me well versed in engineering by the end of the summer. It was great to show what I'm made of! It was a lot of work, but it's MUCH better than working on excel all day with a large cup of coffee (past internships). Also, all of my managers acted like real mentors throughout the entire summer, and my direct boss was an excellent leader.

What I wish was different

I'd like to gain some more data center experience. One day visits to Facebook, QTS, etc. would be nice to occur more often.

Advice

Become very familiar with engineering design: statics, solidworks, matlab, proposals, etc. This internship was more of a free range internship where managers allowed you to do your best with the knowledge you already have. SO GAIN SOME DESIGN EXPERIENCE BEFORE APPLYING!! You could be assigned anything, it's not specific.
