What I liked

I liked the work environment and culture, had a great team who were always ready to help!

What I wish was different

I wish I had less mundane tasks and got a chance to explore other departments at PEN more during my internship!

Advice

Take time to reach out to other departments you might be interested in and talk to others about their experience. everybody at pen seems super friendly and ready to help if you ask.

Prison and Justice Writing Intern

September 2022 - May 2023 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I liked the amount of responsibility I was given and the opportunity to directly communicate with clients via mail. I was given extensive, hands-on insight into how mail is used to censor people in prison.

What I wish was different

I wish I had a little more structure and could have experienced a wider variety of projects.

Advice

Knowing what work to prioritize is very important. It is also important to be transparent about your boundaries and ability to communicate.
