Penn Highlands Healthcare

Dietary Aide

November 2020 - July 2021 • Huntingdon, PA

What I liked

What I wish was different

This hospital was unionized, and I found that this did not benefit me. I found myself carrying a larger workload than others. I was not praised for picking up the slack of others, and they were able to get away with laziness. I believe I work best in a place where everyone is held accountable for their actions, and speaking openly about concerns and problems is supported and encouraged.

Nursing Student Intern

May - June 2021 • DuBois, PA

What I liked

Staff was very helpful and the environment was conducive to learning.

What I wish was different

I wish there were more opportunities to do the second session of internships as well because it was only for 6 weeks.

Advice

I really enjoyed getting to see some different things than I usually see at work and clinical experiences.

Medical Laboratory Assistant

May - July 2021 • Huntingdon, PA

What I liked

My favorite aspect of this internship would probably be the valuable hands-on experience I was able to gain as well as providing efficient patient care while spending my summer here at Penn Highlands Huntingdon. All of the laboratory staff, nurses, as well as residing pathologists were very attentive in explaining each process as thorough as possible and allowed me to carry out specific medical processes myself with the help of their guidance if needed. Overall, I really enjoyed spending my summer here and would definitely consider it as a future career option post graduation in the spring.

Nurse Intern

July - August 2019 • St. Marys, PA

What I liked

I really enjoyed the hands on experience that I received during my 6 week internship. The entire experience was very informative and eye opening at what my career will look like when I graduate. I gained some very good experience with patients from different aspects of healthcare ranging from OB to the ER. I very much so enjoyed the interaction with co-workers also. I learned some valuable lessons from them during my experience.

What I wish was different

I wish that my time during my internship could have been long. Only having a 6 week internship limits how much time you have at the hospital.

Advice

I would advise everyone to try their very best to learn something from their internship. Even if you come across people that do not like their jobs and try to make you work harder than necessary, you should try to find the good parts anyways. Every experience will have its ups and downs, but making the most of it will help you out in the long run.

The opportunity to ask questions and immerse myself within a real healthcare field.

What I wish was different

I wish that I would have been with multiple preceptors instead of primarily with one.

Advice

If you are interested in a nursing career, this internship was very informative and helpful in determining your strengths and weakness to anticipate post graduation.

PCA

June 2019 • DuBois, PA

What I liked

All of my coworkers are amazing and help when there is something that I am unsure of. The job is also in the field that I want to enter after college so the experience I am getting from the job is priceless.

What I wish was different

Nothing to honest, I love everything about my job.

Advice

Once you find a field of study you want to make a career in find a job in the field and get as much experience as you can before you graduate. It will make you look better when applying for other jobs.

I enjoyed getting to experience nursing first hand for six weeks. I also go to experience a field that the program doesn't offer us during school clinical.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have had a longer internship and picked more areas to see.

Advice
