Intern Dog Trainer

February - May 2018 • Philadelphia, PA

What I liked

I loved the field. I enjoyed gaining experience in data analysis and compilation. I am unable to express how grateful I am to have developed skills in training working dogs for various services.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have obtained a job from this experience but I needed to finish my education at Rutgers New Brunswick

Advice

I would definitely recommend others to be respectful and understanding that these are not simply pets but animals working in dangerous fields and require a lot of attention and care.

Summer Intern

June - August 2019 • Philadelphia, PA

What I liked

It was a really great experience in which I had to learn how to do a completely new set of tasks, analyze data and extrapolate important information, and work in a challenging and demanding environment. This was all balanced with the rewarding experience of working wht urban search and rescue dogs that go on to save lives in the future.

What I wish was different

I wish I had gotten to rotate around to the different parts of the center a little bit more. I really enjoyed the fact that I spent all my time with one trainer and a specific team of dogs and people but I would have liked to gain some more insight into the other trainers' processes. I worked with urban search and rescue dogs and although I had a little experience with the police dogs I think there could have been more opportunities to spend time with other search and rescue trainers, single purpose trainers, and dual purpose trainers.

Advice

The biggest thing I learned from this experience is how to adapt to a new environment and learn to do something outside of your comfort zone. I enjoyed every day of my experience even when I was challenged to do something I'd never done or had to deal with a stressful situation. If you really enjoy doing something you should be willing to work through the challenges and work your hardest to improve and continue to improve in that field.
