Don't be afraid to ask the questions you really want to ask. If you truly wanted to find out about something or work somewhere, it is always great to reach out directly and let your interest be known. You'll find that most of the time people are willing to work with you around your situation.

Office Assistant

January 2019 • Malibu, CA

What I liked

As an office assistant for Human Resources, I enjoyed the opportunity to interact with university employees of all positions, backgrounds, and expertise. It has been rewarding to see the lengths my co-workers will go to to satisfy the needs of the university and those serving in it. My view of "human resources" as a field of work has changed from one of legalistic, cold management to one of service and duty of care.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been able to hold more responsibility in the department and perform fewer menial tasks. Upon applying for the job, I was made aware that many of the tasks would be monotonous and that some projects would stretch over weeks or even months. Thus, I have not been at all surprised by my duties, though I do wish there were more opportunities for advancing to higher-responsibility assignments.

Advice

This job is excellent for anyone wanting a glimpse into the corporate world without having to commit to an off-campus job. My advice is to only apply if one is willing to work in a professional work environment and willing to work on various, small projects at once.
