Peraton

Software Developer

December 2021 • College Park, MD

What I liked

The environment is great! I feel comfortable asking my coworkers any questions that I have. My supervisor cares about my growth and empowerment.

What I wish was different

For the most part, everything has been pretty good! I had a few issues in the past with how things were handled, but those issues were minor and infrequent.

Advice

Landing that first job is hardest part of job seeking. Once you have that initial work experience and skill set that you can list on your resume, you'll get plenty more opportunities. If you aren't getting job opportunities from your top choices, it may be okay to initially settle for a lower pay or less preferred company. Peraton is actually my second employer. My first job, at a different employer, I settled for a pretty low salary. After working there for a while, I expressed my financial issues to them, but they dismissed it. So, I put my resume back up with my updated work experience and got tons of recruiters messaging me. One of those was Peraton, and they're great!

Systems Engineer Intern

May - July 2023 • Herndon, VA

What I liked

The environment at Peraton was great. My team really valued having a good work life balance which I found important. The work I was doing was very interesting and they gave me some cool projects to work on. Everyone was also very friendly and great to work with.

What I wish was different

The beginning of my internship the work load was a bit slow but in the end it picked up more. I just wish there was a bit more planning for what I was going to do in the beginning. This lull in the beginning was largely due to a contract ending so it was not their fault. Overall there is not much I wished was different.

Advice

Go in with an open mind and expect to learn a lot. I was working on satellite communication and helping maintain the sites Peraton oversees and I knew nothing about satcomms before hand. They will give you a lot of learning material at first but it is very interesting stuff to learn. Do not be afraid to branch out to others to learn more about what each person does either since each person has a specific role.
