What I liked

Perfect Game paid for my living expenses in a hotel that was close to all of the different fields I worked at throughout the summer. Everyone I worked with was easy to get along with, and they were all from different states so it was very fun to get to know everyone. Since I'm from Washington, I had to take the time to find flights all the way to Fort Myers. Everyone in the organization was so lenient with me and my travels. At the fields, I worked on my own for the most part which taught me a lot about how to build my own schedules and be as efficient as possible.

What I wish was different

It was slightly unorganized, so I wish there was a better structure. My boss actually left the organization a week after I arrived, so I was under a good amount of stress. I had to quickly adapt to this change, but it did teach me how to work independently and communicate effectively with other employees in the organization.

Advice

Work as hard and as much as you can. Once people around you start noticing how much of a hard worker you are, they will appreciate everything you do and become a great reference to have for the future.

What I liked

I was able to schedule my own hours each week - I worked whenever I wanted to, as much or as little as I wanted to. I was never scheduled by a manager; I logged on and picked up shifts on my own. This allowed me to pack in long hours for a few months so that I wouldn’t have to work as many hours throughout the school year.

What I wish was different

I wish I would’ve taken more time off. From May 28th-July 31st I only took off two 6-hour shifts. All other days I worked 16-20 hour days, 7 days a week, which really took a toll on me.

Advice

Only schedule as much as you can handle. While paying for rent, school, etc is important, it’s also important to take care of yourself. Don’t overwork yourself. You make more money in the beginning, but if you burn yourself out then you won’t be able to succeed at work, in school, or in your personal endeavors. Find a healthy balance.

What I liked

I loved getting to be around baseball every day and learning how the sports media environment works. I gained so much knowledge about making connections and building networks within the industry. I also liked having a supervisor who encouraged me to try new things and experiment with voice on social media.

Advice

Make a conscious effort not to get burnt out. The sports industry works fast and never quits, especially when it comes to social media. (This is true of all social media too!) Finding a balance between work and rest is critical. Don't be afraid to talk to others either and learn from people doing different jobs! You can help each other out in the long run.
